PROLEGOMENON

PROLEGOMENON

PROLEGOMENON is a webcomic about Diego Suaviter's birthday, and how its friends decide to celebrate!

As a gift, Cherry Thaxton distributes a mobile multiplayer game that mew built with Amada Trejo, using snippets of abandoned games from mew's parent's company. Some of the code from said company is actually the base of a game called SEED, whose creators are unknown, but somehow has wound up in the vaults of Thaxton Industries.

When Roy Miller is given his copy of the game, he decides to launch it prior to the time of actual play to ensure it works as expected - triggering a portal that takes him to Dodecastratum, a small universe, to play SEED in. Roy and his friends must now navigate the rules of the game, learning how to adapt to the situations it puts them through with the assistance of the last survivors of the alien race that designed SEED.

There's a big issue, though: given the patched-together nature of the game's code, it's not funcitoning properly, and the final goal and prize of the game is corrupted. What's worse is that this world has a time limit, and once the countdown hits 0, nobody knows what happens (but it can't be good).

How do you beat a game without winning?

PLOT

EPISODE 1: Roy Miller's Big Adventure

The first episode serves as an introduction to the normal life of Roy Miller and his friends. It talks about Diego's birthday, as well as everyone's birthday preparations for it, before Cherry sends Roy a download link for the game mew intends to play for Diego's birthday. Roy decides to test the app himself, opening it before Cherry wanted him to, and it appears to crash his phone. However, when he looks out the window, he sees he's been taken to an entirely different world from New York City - the Dodecastratum. At the end of the episode, we're also introduced to Pedro and Mia, two individuals in Between who are watching the game on an old TV.

EPISODE 2: Homemade Genesis

As Roy's friends realize things aren't right with this game, they decide to launch their own apps to play early, starting with Cherry. Each sequences gives us a glimpse into the life of the characters as well as pieces of how the game works. SEED has crafting capabilities, spawns enemies, and gives the players genuine superpowers. The goal of the game, as they go along and learn, is to make it to the Light at the center of Dodecastratum and claim it by finishing their quests in their respective corners of Dodecastratum. However, at the end of the episode, they're warned by an unknown person who seems familiar with SEED not to claim the Light, due to the fact that the game is incredibly corrupted due to not being a fully-legitimate SEED game (and mostly Cherry's thrown-in code).

Throughout the episode are scenes of Between. Pedro and Mia have a third person, Jenna, approach them to tell them that whatever the outcome of this game is, it's making her unable to 'hear' the timelines - and once the game is over, these timelines she hears are destroyed. This alarms the trio, who proceed to Gardener-B's house in order to get help from him. He's kind of a jackass though.

Commercial Break 1

Pedro recognizes the name of the individual at the end of Episode 2, who contacts the players of SEED. This leads him to take Mia and Jenna away from Gardener-B's house, where Gardener-B finally pops up again to express his relief at not needing to actually care about the issue at hand. Gardener-B proceeds to tell the viewer how the Garden works, and that Pedro and Jenna have been punished by a couple of individuals named the Officials, which is why they're in Between. He also comments that Mia should not exist, and wasn't made of this Garden.

After a bit of exposition dumping, Gardener-B decides he's busy, and sends the viewer off to watch a conversation between Albus and Olivia. They're discussing the state of this SEED game, and their apparent newfound sentience. Albus expresses wanting to explore this gift further, and encourages Olivia to do the same, though she seems hesitant.

Finally, there's a sequence with Bud, one of the villagers from Julio's kingdom. Bud walks into their house and stare at their paws for a beat, which glitch out as they watch.

EPISODE 3: The Big Candle at the Center of the Universe

The players decide to discuss what was told to them by the stranger at the end of the previous episode. They settle on focusing on their personal quests, which they each attempt to finish as they wait for the stranger's directions. During this time, they're contacted by members of the strangers' group, who reveal themselves to be from another universe and part of the species who initially created SEED. Not only that, but they had attempted to play the game to escape the end of their world - which led to their game being nonfunctional, and requiring them to find a new way to get out of the game. Throughout the episode, these aliens continuously contact the players, trying their best to answer what questions they can as they formulate a plan. The players also explore their powers, figuring out how to use them to beat their quests.

In Between, Pedro and co find the aliens, learning that they're the last surviving members of their race after their world ended. Benji, Pedro's partner and universe-hopping trinket lover, opted to hop into their universe to rescue them from their failed game, bringing them to a place called Elsewhere.

As the episode goes on, Sofia starts plotting with Rhett and Amada to go behind the rest of the player's backs and try to break out of the game themselves.
