Deadheading is a visual novel about the time you and your friends went camping in the woods.
It is a short story about the outcomes of the four parenting styles identified in psychology, in a metaphorical way. Otto, the protagonist, has returned from college to visit their hometown and their friends - Arthur, Anne, and Pat, also referred to as Robot, Ghost, and Zombie. Over the course of the game, Otto chooses to spend time with different friends, which changes some interactions in the forest. While Otto is not able to completely undo the messages their friend's parents have established in their minds, Otto is still able to guide their friends - at least somewhat - towards a more satisfactory way of living. The player has the option to focus entirely on one character to hang out with, or spend time with each of them equally, though this does not change the ending in depth.
This game was mostly a technical test to learn how Renpy would work, and what it was capable of.
The game opens in the woods, where the four friends are travelling to a clearing to set up for the night. Otto delegates tasks to everyone, determining that Zombie should collect sticks, Robot should set up the tent, and Ghost - who had hurt her leg on the walk out - should tend to her wound. Zombie then asks what Otto plans to do, which opens to the first choice the player must make as to who to spend time with.
ACT 1: ROBOT
Otto decides to help Robot set the tent up for the team. The two find a clear area to work in, and start talking about how to set up a tent. Robot says he could look it up online if all else fails, though he seems pretty uncertain about the process. Otto points out there's no reception, which only makes Robot even more anxious. Otto starts guiding Robot through how to pitch a tent, giving him directions from memory. When Robot makes a mistake, Otto points it out, to which Robot responds by putting his face in his hands, clearly frustrated. The player can choose how to approach Robot's frustration here.
REASSURE HIM
Otto says it's difficult to set up a tent, and when Robot says they know what they're doing, Otto points out they've been camping a million times. Robot calms down a little, though he asks them to point out any more mistakes he might make, and they agree to. The two of them finish pitching the tent, high fiving before checking in with the rest of their friends.
LEAVE HIM
Otto, not knowing what else to do, sets the tent up while Robot stands there with his face in his hands. After the tent is complete, Robot apologizes for being useless. Otto assures him it's not a big deal, and the two check in with the rest of their friends.
ACT 1: GHOST
Otto decides to help Ghost deal with her wounds, in apology for not warning her about the thorns that hurt her in the introduction. The team splits to do their respective tasks, and Ghost is nervous about her injury getting infected. Otto has her sit on a bench in the woods, and starts patching up her leg for her. Otto tries to make small talk about what's been going on with the friends since they left for school two years ago, and Ghost comments that it feels like it's been forever. Ghost laments that Otto has parents and friends who are always there for them, and how much it's helped them go off into the world and be successful. The player has the option to either reassure her or talk about their own hardships.
IT'S OKAY TO BE A CRYBABY
Otto reassures Ghost that it's okay to be emotional, saying that it means she cares, and that the world could do with a little more love and care. They finish wrapping up Ghost's leg, and then meet with the other members of the party to get a campfire going.
LIFE ISN'T PERFECT FOR ME EITHER
Otto says their life isn't perfect, and they struggle with typical adult things - school and work and bills. They point out Ghost's parents let her live with them still, free of charge, despite her age. Ghost doesn't respond to this, and stays quiet while Otto finishes bandaging her leg up. Once they're done, the two meet with the other members of the party to get a campfire going.
ACT 1: ZOMBIE
Otto decides to collect wood, leaves, and dirt with Zombie, in order to build a campfire. The two discuss what's been happening with their other two friends since Otto last visited, where Zombie tells them that Ghost got a job at a library and Robot is still reliant on his parents. When Otto turns the conversation to what Zombie's been up to, they reveal they've been fired from their old job, and are vague about what they've been up to now, which leaves the player with the option to either push the issue or drop it.
PRESS ON THEM
Otto tells Zombie that they're a cool person, and that Otto feels they can do anything if they just applied themself. Zombie's quiet about it for a minute before cracking jokes and moving on. The two head back to the campsite after gathering wood.
LEAVE IT ALONE
Otto says it sounds like Zombie's been having fun and suggests they do stuff together, to which Zombie points out they're already doing stuff together. It gets uncomfortably quiet. The two head back to the campsite after gathering wood.
CAMPFIRE STORIES
After finishing with their tasks, Otto and their friends decide to set up the campfire before it gets too dark to see. During this, Zombie enthuses about telling scary stories, to which Robot protests, saying their stories are too scary. When Zombie challenges Robot to tell one, he rejects the suggestion as well, saying he's not the creative type. In order to avoid any further arguments, Otto steps in, saying they can tell a scary story to the party. The player can now decide what to tell a story about.
ACT 2: ROBOT
Otto tells a story about a robot who rebelled. The robot's creators are two well-known and respected people in town, though the robot secretly knew they were building a doomsday machine to use. When the creators ask the robot to get a nuclear powered battery, the robot decides to instead hook himself up to the battery in order to try to destroy the doomsday machine before it could be finished. The player can decide whether the robot's mission was successful or not.
DESTROYED HIMSELF
The robot destroys himself and the town with the resulting explosion. Robot seems sullen after the story, and Zombie says it's boring. After the story is over, the group decide to settle in for the night, as it starts getting darker in the woods.
DESTROYED THE MACHINE
The robot destroys the machine and exposes its creators, resulting in them going to jail. Zombie insults the story because it wasn't scary, though Robot seems to have thought it was good. After the story is over, the group decide to settle in for the night, as it starts getting darker in the woods.
ACT 2: GHOST
Otto tells a story about a ghost who fell in love. In their story, the ghost was the loneliest ghost in the world, forgotten by her family in her graveyard. A stranger visits her grave, revealing themself to be a psychic, and striking up conversation with the lonely ghost. At the end of their conversation, the ghost asks the psychic to come back, and the player can decide how the psychic replies, changing the story.
I'LL ALWAYS BE WITH YOU
The psychic reassures the ghost that they'd be with her, though not at the graveyard - as it turns out, both are ghosts, and they decide to leave the graveyard together. Zombie calls the twist stupid, and Robot defends Otto. Ghost asks if the two got to be happy, and Otto reassures her that they did. After the story is over, the group decide to settle in for the night, as it starts getting darker in the woods.
I'LL NEVER COME BACK
The psychic tells the ghost that they'd never come back, because she's a ghost and they have a life, and better things to do than mope around graveyards. Zombie likes the story, though says there's nothing wrong with hanging out in graveyards. Otto ends the story saying the ghost would haunt that graveyard forever. After the story is over, the group decide to settle in for the night, as it starts getting darker in the woods.
ACT 2: ZOMBIE
Otto tells a story about a zombie who knows they're a zombie. In their story, the other zombies didn't care about being undead. The zombie decides to go on their own to find a cure, reading books and searching the land for something to help them. At this point, the player can decide whether the zombie finds a cure or not, which changes the story.
THEY FOUND IT
Otto finishes the story, saying the cure is a weird flower that grows in acid pools 'or something'. Zombie teases them for being unable to name a flower despite their botany degree. After the story is over, the group decide to settle in for the night, as it starts getting darker in the woods.
THEY DIDN'T FIND IT
Otto finishes the story, saying the zombie never finds a cure, despite all their searching. Ghost says she would help them look, and Zombie teases her about being eaten by zombies. After the story is over, the group decide to settle in for the night, as it starts getting darker in the woods.
FOOTSTEPS IN THE NIGHT
Otto is woken by what sounds like footsteps outside the tent. Zombie starts teasing Ghost about the sounds, saying it's a bear coming to eat them all. The group discuss what to do about the issue for a moment before Otto decides to investigate. The player can choose who to bring along with them at this point.
ACT 3: ROBOT
Robot and Otto leave the tent, bringing a flashlight with them. Robot complains about the cold, and asks if Otto had considered the possibility of there actually being a bear outside the tent. Otto points out it's much more likely it was just some leaves falling, or other campers in the area. The two search for any signs of wildlife out in the woods, just in case. During this search, Robot asks Otto about their opinions on free will, which cames from nowhere - Otto comments on it, and Robot says the woods at this time of night have him in a philosophical mood. He points out his parents want him to be a psychologist like them, and Otto asks about his future author dreams, to which he replies it's not a stable career path for him. The player can answer his question about if people have free will or not.
I THINK SO
Otto says there's metaphors for humans and robots for a reason, and that people naturally want to follow other people's orders. Robot wonders if people would rather not think for themeselves, and if that's why people like orders so much. Otto makes a joke about the validity of people in charge, though Robot is sullen. Robot suddenly changes subject, pointing out there's no other signs of bears outside. The two head back to the tent in silence.
I DON'T THINK SO
Otto says they think people are capable of deciding what they want, and how to get it. No form of fate could remove autonomy, in their opinion. Robot asks what happens if people fail, and proves those who feel there should be someone 'in charge' right. The conversation gets personal, with Robot continuing, asking what happens if he proves the only thing he's capable of is failure. Otto suggests he just keep trying new plans, and that being happy is stronger than any hurt caused by failing. They encourage Robot's dreams of being a writer, saying that his parents are wrong, and he's talented. Robot is encouraged, saying they're right.
The two confirm they don't see any bears out here, and head back for the tent.
ACT 3: GHOST
Ghost and Otto leave the tent, bringing a flashlight with them. Otto reassures Ghost that she doesn't have to accompany them, but she tells them she's okay, despite shaking the flashlight too hard to use it properly. During their walk in the woods, Ghost asks Otto if they hate her, or find her to be 'too much'. She reveals that she knows she comes off as spacey and aloof sometimes, but she's scared of losing people, and watching them leave her. She says she tries to be attentive and caring so people don't leave, but is worried that this makes her annoying in a new way - a complex from her parents, who she says she isn't good enough to keep them around, even though they made her. The player can tell her that she's being paranoid, or that she isn't annoying.
YOU'RE BEING PARANOID
Otto tells Ghost that she's being paranoid, and asks if she trusts the friends to say if they found her annoying. Ghost gets more emotional, saying she's worried because Otto left and that soon Robot and Zombie will too. In response, Otto points out that people will always leave, and that Ghost can make more friends. After a beat of silence, Ghost says she thinks maybe Otto wasn't the right person to talk to about her concerns.
After the discussion, Ghost and Otto confirm there's no bears, and head back to the tent in silence.
YOU'RE NOT ANNOYING
Otto reassures Ghost that she isn't annoying, and that they find her to be sweet and thoughtful. They say that people who fail to see this in Ghost are missing out. Ghost seems to be cheered up by this, telling Otto that they're one of her best friends.
After the discussion, Ghost and Otto confirm there's no bears, and head back to the tent.
ACT 3: ZOMBIE
Zombie and Otto leave the tent, talking about enjoying some tea when they get back to town after the trip. During their walk in the woods, Zombie starts talking to Otto, discussing how they were an achiever in high school and always doing extracirriculars. They ask how Otto figured out what they wanted to do in life. The player here can choose how to respond to Zombie's question.
HAD A PLAN
Otto answers that they followed a plan, to which Zombie asks what they would do when they got overwhelmed by everything they had to do. Otto responds that they broke their plan down into smaller chunks to manage it. They also say that they didn't do anything alone, which seems to make Zombie think for a minute before responding with a thanks for the tips. They talk about their parents and how they were raised, and that their parents never expected anything from them - even bare minimum things, like grades and chores. As a result, Zombie never learned how to apply any ambition towards their dreams.
After the discussion, Zombie declares they don't see any bears, and the two decide to head back to the tent. Otto goes back to sleep.
MADE IT UP
Otto answers that they had no clue what they were doing during all those extracirriculars, to which Zombie is shocked. They comment that Otto always seemed confident in what they were doing, and Otto advises that they simply let life take Zombie wherever it may, and that they stay adaptable. Zombie asks what happens if they aren't going anywhere, and Otto suggests maybe that's where they're meant to be. After the discussion, Zombie declares they don't see any bears, and the two decide to head back to the tent in silence.
FINALE
In the morning, Otto is the last person awake. Zombie teases Robot about dying of mosquito bites and illness before they go home. They have a discussion about the camping trip, then head to the car and go home.
